Traveling to the soggy Himachal, Priyanka Gandhi requests that the government proclaim a “national disaster.”
Priyanka Gandhi commended the enthusiasm with which the people and the Himachal administration are handling the issue during her visit to Kullu.
Congresswoman Priyanka Gandhi Vadra requested on Tuesday that the recent disaster in Himachal Pradesh brought on by intense monsoon rains be classified as a “national disaster,” calling on the Centre to put “party politics” aside.
Ms. Gandhi encouraged the Centre to rise above “party politics” without taking into account whether the state is governed by the Congress or the BJP, according to a statement released here. Ms. Gandhi visited rain-affected parts of the Kullu district and inspected relief and restoration efforts.
On July 14 and 15, Kullu and Mandi districts saw flash floods and landslides brought on by persistent rain.
Ms. Gandhi praised the resilience of the locals and the state government during her visit to Kullu.
“By banding together and taking the initiative to aid the affected families, the people of Himachal have set an example for the nation. The release reported Ms. Gandhi as saying that residents of the state “have stepped forward to donate for those affected by natural calamities and even did’shram dan’ (physical labor) to open roads washed out by rains or blocked by landslides.”
The leader continued, “The state government is doing far more than it can by using its limited resources to help the affected families, but without the help of the Union government, it is difficult to restore normalcy and finish renovation projects in addition to helping the people.
On her route from Kullu to Manali, the Congress leader stopped in impacted regions, such as the Sangam Bridge at Bhuntar, which was harmed by the Beas river’s overflow after a period of severe rain in July. She also spoke with flood victims at the Aloo Ground in Manali.
The Washington apple’s import duty has also been decreased by the federal government, which would immediately impact the State’s horticulturists and result in losses for them. The statement noted that the Central leadership ought to take into account the advantages for the State’s farmers and horticulturists.
Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the chairman of the state’s Congress and the current Congress member for the Mandi Parliament constituency, as well as Minister Vikramaditya Singh of the Public Works Department, were with Ms. Gandhi.
The Mandi, Shimla, and Solan districts will also be visited by the Congress leader.
Since the beginning of the monsoon on June 24 to September 11, Himachal Pradesh has experienced losses of 8,679 crore.
According to the state emergency operation center, rain-related disasters have claimed the lives of over 260 people.
During the monsoon season, up to 165 landslides and 72 flash floods were reported. Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Solan districts reported 94 of the 111 landslide deaths, while these districts also had 18 of the 19 deaths from flash floods.
The losses have been estimated at 12,000 crore, and Chief Minister Sukhu has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare the disaster in Himachal Pradesh a national disaster.
